Hi Philip,
The PCM4104 supports TDM in two formats:
1. A TDM "short frame" containing only 4 channels of data
2. A standard 8 channel TDM frame, with two PCM4104s. One is configured using the SUB frame to accept the first 4 channels, the other is configured to accept the next 4 channels.
If you want to use sixteen channels, then you need to use two dedicated data lines with 8 channels each, or 4 lines with 4 channels each.
In regards to the SPI lines. The PCM4104 does not support daisy-chaining, so you will need to have a unique chip select line for PCM. You can share a CS lines if you will be writing identical data to each device. I do not think you will need any data buffers as long as the SPI signal does not violate any of the timing specifications.
Thanks,
Paul
