[FAQ] PCM6260-Q1: What are the power-up time and power-down times for different sampling rates?

Part Number: PCM6260-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM6240-Q1, PCM6020-Q1, PCM6360-Q1, PCM6340-Q1

Hi,

What are the power-up and power-down times for different sampling rates for the PCM6xx0-Q1 family? That family includes the following devices: PCM6260-Q1, PCM6240-Q1, PCM6020-Q1, PCM6360-Q1, PCM6340-Q1.

  • The power-up time (the time it takes for the part to go from “sleep mode” to “active mode”) for the PCM6xx0-Q1family is comprised of this formula:

Power-up time = power-on sequencing time (fixed) + soft-stepping time (dependent on sampling rate)

The “power-on sequencing time” is ~10ms (typical) and can vary +/- 10%. This includes power-up of AREG, VREF, PLL, ADC modulator, and the internal digital before we start sending un-muted record data to ASI bus.

The “soft-stepping time” is 0 ms if it is disabled. If it is enabled, then it is based on the sample rate with 0.5dB step per frame (from -100dB to programmed digital volume control setting). For example, for 192kHz sample rate and a volume control setting = 0dB, then it will be 200/Fs = 1ms.

Note this does not include a non-zero filter settling time. This will not impact when you begin seeing data at the output, but rather when you begin seeing meaningful data.

The power-down time (the time it takes for the part to go from “active mode” to “sleep mode”) for the PCM6xx0-Q1family is comprised of this formula:

Power-down time = power-down sequencing time (fixed) + soft-stepping time (dependent on sampling rate)

The “power-down sequencing time” is ~0.25ms (typical) and can vary +/- 10%. This includes power-down of all blocks like ADC, DSP, AREG, VREF, PLL etc.

The “soft-stepping time” is ~2.5ms (typical, minimum) for Fs >= 96kHz and can vary +/- 10%. This can’t be disabled and prevents unwanted pops/clicks during power-down. These pops and clicks could break the speaker element and indicate an instantaneous change in energy going to the load. The soft-stepping divides down with sampling rates lower than 96kHz, and 48kHz would be 5ms for example.
