OPA1622: Is data shown in Typical Plots versus Temperature for -55C to -40C based on measurement or extrapolation?

Part Number: OPA1622

Hi Experts

My customer needs to operate the device in some cases below -40C. They would like to know the following:

  1. Are the dotted lines untested extrapolations?
    1. What is their source and can they be designed to?
    2. Do the dotted lines provide realistic guidance for temperatures below -40C?
  2. What prevented TI from making the dotted lines solid?
  3. If additional supporting data for the -55°C value is available, can TI make it available for review?

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,

Jim B

  • Hello Jim,

The OPA1622 has an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, and a specification temperature of -40°C to +125°C. And as you have noted some of the Typical Characteristics graphs show dotted lines extending the curves below -40°C on the low end, and +125 C° on the high end.

I checked with the former OPA1622 Systems Engineer who defined the product. He said the characterization was fully accomplished across the complete temperature range show in the graphs, -55°C to +150°C. Since the specification temperature range is -40°C to +125°C, the temperatures outside that range and shown on the graphs are indicated as dashed continuations of the curves. He indicated that the OPA1622 uses a modern, high-performance bipolar process that is very capable of wide temperature operation.

The dotted extensions of the curves should serve as a guideline of typical performance at the extended temperatures. They certainly can be used provided they take into account the understanding they indicate typical performance and some variance is natural.

Normally, we do not provide our product characterization measurement data to customers. TI specifies that information Company Confidential.
