TAS2770EVM: TAS2770EVM problem with USB audio communication

Part Number: TAS2770EVM

We have multiple TAS2770EVM boards. One of these boards has stopped working. We use a 12 VDC 2A PSU and connect the board to a PC using the USB cable. We use the same PSU for another TAS2770EVM board and this board works fine. The boards have identical jumper settings. The defective board shows up in “Texas Instruments USB Audio Device Control Panel” as a two channel board with a sample rate of 8000 Hz. The working board shows up as an eight channel board with a sample rate of 48000 Hz.
In PPC the defective board shows up and we can “Connect” to it as well as “Power up”. After about a minute, the defective board drops out, it is no longer connected in PPC and in “Texas Instruments USB Audio Device Control Panel”, it is also no longer connected. It helps to remove power from the board and power it up again.
We are not able to playback audio through the defective board. The ASIO control panel hangs and the board drops out.

We want to return it to Mouser but they have requested that you help us verify that the board is defective. Is there anything we can do to reset the board? Otherwise it must be defective.
Do you have any idea what could cause such a defect?
Maybe electrostatic discharge?
What enclosures do you recommend for the board?

Best regards,
Kim

  • Hi, Kim,

Our team will take a look at this case and will provide an answer as soon as possible.

  • Hi Kim,

Can you please open your system Sound Control Panel? Then double click on the device and select the Advanced tab, what I'd like to know is if you can select the format/sample rate from the drop down list.

Does using a different USB port makes a difference?

  • Hi Ivan,

I have tested the board three different PCs, different USB cables and different USB ports. It does not make any difference.

In Windows Sound Control Panel I can select different formats and sample rates. However, the board always stops responding after about a minute. Then it shows as disconnected in PPC.

    Best regards,

    Kim

  • Hi Kim,

If you have multiple boards, could you please follow the steps included in the User's Guide section 6?
Please place the board with the problems as the secondary board, not the one connected to USB (only 1 board will be connected to USB)

If the above test works without any problems, then we can isolate and debug the controller side of the board.

If there is any trouble during the test, I'll ask you to check the IRQ flags at Device Control panel within PPC3 to check if there is any error being triggered.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Ivan,

I have connected the boards. I have not tested VI sensing, only audio playback. When connecting a speaker to the right board (the defective board) and starting playback, the board works fine. It reproduces the left audio channel.

If you agree that the board is defective, we can send it back to you, and you can perform further debugging. Or do you think the problem can be fixed by somehow resetting the controller?

    Best regards,
    Kim

  • Hi Kim,

Let me share a tool and a straightforward procedure to reprogram the controller onboard. I'll send the material early next week.
After that the board should work correctly.

  • Hi Kim,

Please connect your not working EVM and execute the attached application. Then please follow the instructions below:

    • Connect EVM
    • Open the app
    • At RunTimeConfig tab, click on "Connect" button at the top right
    • Then go to FactoryConfig tab
    • Make sure to select the settings as below and click "Config" button at the bottom

After the process described above, try to configure the EVM using PPC3 as usual and play audio, please let us know if this works to make your EVM work normally.

    xMOS-HID-Control.zip

  • Hi Ivan,

I downloaded xMOS-HID-Control.exe. When running it I get this message:

I then downloaded and installed the LabVIEW run-time engine:
    ni-labview-2020-runtime-engine-x86_20.0_online_repack2.exe
I rebooted my PC. However, xMOS-HID-Control.exe still claims that it cannot locate the LabVIEW run-time.
I also tried installing the 64 bit version:
    ni-labview-2020-runtime-engine_20.0_online.exe
    However, that did not help.
Which LabVIEW run-time should I install?

    /Kim

  • Hi Kim,

Attached is the runtime installer associated with this tool, please let me know if it works.

    LabView Runtime Engine.zip

  • Hi Ivan,

Unfortunately, it did not work. The message is the same.

    Best regards,

    Kim

  • Hi Kim,

Let me try on a fresh system on my side to provide further information on how to use the xMOS-HID tool.

  • Hi Kim,

Please try using the runtime installer from this link:

    http://ftp.ni.com/support/softlib/labview/labview_runtime/2014/Windows/f2/LVRTE2014f2std.exe

I tried this on a fresh system and it is working OK after using this runtime.

  • Hi Ivan,

I have some good news and some bad news.

I can now open the application:

But I can not "Connect" to the board.

The board also no longer shows up as a soundcard when connecting it. In Windows Device Manager, it shows up like this (no matter what USB port I use):

I have noticed that the "USB RDY" D3 LED does not shine nearly as bright on this board as on the other boards. I do not know if this somehow is related to this problem.

    Best regards,

    Kim

  • Hi Kim,

This is unfortunate, could you please reach out directly to my email?:

We'll send you another board and please proceed with returning process of this EVM. We will test it and identify if this is firmware or electrically related.
