TLV320AIC3101EVM-K: Drivers on Windows 10

Part Number: TLV320AIC3101EVM-K
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3101

Hi,

I'm hoping to use the EVM GUI software on a Windows 10 system. Thus far I have:

  • Downloaded the GUI software, slac249
  • Installed using the "troubleshoot compatibility" workaround described in this TI forum post
  • Downloaded drivers, slac521
  • Installed both USB-MODEVM_WDM and USB-MODEVM_vista&7 drivers by disabling "driver signature verification", also detailed in the above forum post
  • Plugged in the EVM, which articulates as an "unknown device"
  • Manually updated the driver for the "unknown device"
  • EVM now articulates in Device Manager
    • NI-VISA USB Devices
    • USB-MODEVM

I've made one change to the SW2, per section 2.2.1 of the User Guide (slau209a):

  • Change SW-2.1 to ON

All other switches are in factory default position and match the recommendation of section 2.2.1.
Once I move SW-2.1 (A1) to ON, the LED at D2 illuminates.

I see the power LEDs in this state:

  • D3: green
  • D4: green
  • D5: red
  • D6: unlit
  • D7: green

All other jumpers are in their factory default state. Specifically,

  • JMP6 connecting pins 1-2 (USB)
  • JMP10 connecting pins 3-5 (selecting I2C)
  • JMP11 connecting pins 3-5 (selecting A0=0)
  • JMP12 connecting pins 3-5 (selecting A1=0)

After launching the GUI software,

  • Select AIC3106
  • Select I2C
  • Select A1=ON, A0=ON (for I2C address 0x36)
    • Also tried A1=OFF, A0=OFF (for I2C address 0x30)

The software shows the dialog "Connect USB" - the GUI can't seem to find the USB device.

Do you have any suggestions on how to connect the device? I've tried several other switch positions but to no avail thus far.

Thanks!

  • Hello Kevin,

    Apologies for the delayed response.

The PC recognizing the device as USB-MODEVM is a step in the right direction. Just a couple of comments/questions:

    1. SW-2.1 is A0. Do you mean A0 or A1? Why was this switch changed?

    2. With SW-2 in default state, D2 should light up. Is D2 only lighting when you switch A0 or A1?

    3. The power LEDs look fine.

    Regards,

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

You're right, my mistake; I should have referred to SW-2.2 (A1). I think I slipped back into zero-indexing....

The pin state out of the box was:

    • SW2.1, A0: ON
    • SW2.2, A1: OFF
    • SW2.3, A2: ON

When I plug in the device in this configuration, D2 does not light up.

I found that if I change the pin state to:

    • SW2.1, A0: ON
    • SW2.2, A1: ON
    • SW2.3, A2: ON

then D2 lights up. Is that the correct solution?

Thanks for the confirmation of the power LEDs.

Do you have other ideas of things I could try? I wonder if it's a driver/Windows 10 issue.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  • Hello Kevin,

    No worries... it happens!

Default SW-2 should be SW2.1-2.7 should be ON( switched to LO) and SW2.8 should be OFF (HI). Please take a look at the below image for reference. Can you also send a picture of both the TLV320AIC3101 EVM and the USB-MODEVM so I can take a look?

    Regards,

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

Pardon the delay - it took me awhile to track down a good camera.

The position in your photo is not what I saw after unboxing, but it is the same position that I arrived at.

Anything else look out of sorts?

Detailed pictures of my current setup are below.

  • Hi,

    Following up -

    • Do you have any feedback on the hardware settings?
    • Do you have any suggestions for configuring Windows 10 software/drivers?

    Thanks,

    -Kevin

  • Hello Kevin,

Apologies for he delayed response. The hardware images you sent show both the daughter card and the Mother Board in default state. I have a couple of comments/questions regarding the next steps:

    • After installing the drivers did you restart the PC?
    • Please disable any antivirus software and try connecting back to the GUI. It is possible the antivirus software may be interfering.
    • Can you verify in the Device manager that the USB-MODEVM is also showing up in "Sound, Video and game controllers"

We are currently trying to replicate this issue here so we can try and find a solution. I will update you soon.

    Regards,

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

    Thanks for checking the hardware.

    To answer your questions:

    • Yes. I rebooted again just to be sure, but there is no change in behavior
    • Antivirus should be disabled. It had no effect.
    • Yes, I see it there. See screenshot

Is there any other information that I can provide? Perhaps I didn't install the driver properly?

    Thanks again,

    -Kevin

  • Small update - I managed to find a Windows 7 and install the program and driver on this machine. It behaves almost identically to the Windows 10 machine; the program and driver install, the USB device articulates under both "NI-VISA USB Devices" and "Sound, video and game controllers", but the program says "Connect USB" when run.

  • HI Kevin,

Thanks for that update. It sounds like a USB-MODEVM firmware issue. We have not seen issues like this on Win7. How old is the board? Was it recently purchased? And are you US based? We can get you a known working board for you to try out.

    Regards,

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

The board is quite new, from my perspective; we ordered it last week (Feb 12 2020).

Yes, I'm in the US on the West Coast. I'm happy to try a known-good board.

In the meantime, do you have any other troubleshooting ideas on the Windows 7/10 driver? Perhaps a mistake that I am making?

How can I move forward getting a known-good board?

    Thanks again,

    -Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

Is it alright if I contact you offline? I will ask for shipping details and other information needed to send you a board. In the meantime, I cannot think of any other debug steps for you to try.

    Regards,

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

Please do - I'll wait for your message.

    Thanks again for your help,

    -Kevin

  • Note for future reference - I received a base board but the program still exhibits the same behavior.

I've tried Windows 10 and also a Windows 7 system.
