CDCE706: Programming the part

Part Number: CDCE706
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CDCEL9XXPROGEVM, , CLOCKPRO, CDCE906

Team,

My customer needs help programming the CSCE706:

I have the a new CDCEL9XXPROGEVM programmer on my bench and I have a few samples of the CDCE706 to develop with.  Now I’m trying to get the software set up so I can program the parts.  I have downloaded the TI Clock Pro v1.2.1 software (scac119.zip from http://www.ti.com/tool/clockpro) to program these parts, but it looks like this version does not the support the CDCE706 part.

When I click on [ Skip ] to select a device, I only see these choices, but not the CDCE706...

What software I should be using with the USB-based EVM?

Thanks

Viktorija

  • Hi Viktorija,

if your intention is to program the eeprom of CDCE706, you can click "Programming EVM Tool" and then select CDCE706.

  • Yes, I do plan on programming the EEPROM in the device. So the information you provided will help resolve the second half of my issue.

But before that, I need to be able to create the configuration file that I wish to program into the EEPROM. The older version of ClockPro that I used in the past had a GUI that showed the clock source, PLLs, dividers, output MUX, and output enables. You could click on various fields in the GUI to dial up the desired frequency outputs on each of the clock outputs. What software tool should I be using to generate the configuration file?
  • Hi Viktorija,

Please try this tool to configure the device.

  • Noel, per customer:

I’m not having much luck.  I tried both scac119 and scac073 at home last night to see if I could make any progress on my own Windows7 PC.

For scac119, I went through the steps to temporarily disable driver signatures to install the USB driver, and it looked like the process completed successfully.  When I plugged in the EVM I would see this:

However, when I launched ClockPro and clicked on [ Programming EVM Tool ] for the programmer, when clicking on [ Find Boards ] it still didn’t find any.  Pretty much the same results as at the office.

For scac073, this program requires the LabVIEW runtime library (which I did not have installed at home).  It requested the v8.2 library, but when I went out to the NI website I didn’t see that version, so instead downloaded the current 2018 library.  I installed this library and attempted to run the TIclockProProgrammerSept09.exe file, but it still barked at me saying it needed the LabVIEW runtime library.  So I couldn’t even get this program running at home.

Now I do have a LabVIEW library installed here at work that scac073 likes, so it runs.  I select “CDCE906/CDCE706” and click on [ Find Boards ] and it also says no board detected:

Overall, this has been a pretty disappointing experience.

Any further guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Viktorija

  • Hi Viktorija,

I found some more information on setting up the tool, hope they help.

It seems that the LabView library is here: www.ni.com/.../
After you generate/save the CDCE706 config file in Pro-Clock, follow this Programming Guide: e2e.ti.com/.../CDCEx06_5F00_CDCE_2800_L_2900_9xx_5F00_Programming_5F00_Guide.pdf
  • Still no luck. I was able to get the LabVIEW v8.2 runtime library installed on my machine at home over the weekend, but that did not help with actually talking to the EVM. It still seems to me that this is likely a USB driver issue. Unfortunately, the older proClock program requires it to successfully find the EVM before it will allow me to generate a config file. And since the newer ClockPro is the preprogramming tool, obviously it needs to communicate with the EVM as well.
  • HI Viktorija,

I am sorry I was not able to help the customer to resolve the problem. Lane will continue to help you on this. I am closing this post now.
