LMK61E07: VCO calibration rules

Part Number: LMK61E07

Hi,

we are designing an audio product where LMK61E07 will be a master clock synchronized to an external clock, much like as it is described in the DCXO section. We shall do fine tuning on a continuous basis and some bigger changes when the external closk is switched over. It is important that there be no glitches when doing this tuning. There is one point in the datasheet that is of concern for us, i.e.

8.3.12 VCO Calibration, that states The VCO must be calibrated to ensure that the clock outputs deliver optimal phase noise performance. Fundamentally, a VCO calibration establishes an

optimal operating point within the tuning range of the VCO. Setting R72[1] to 1 causes a VCO recalibration and is necessary after device reconfiguration.

What are the rules for device reconfiguration ? - after what changes do we need to do it ? How long does it take to recalibate ? I assume that might mean some significant deterioration of clock quality during recalib ?

Regards, Pawel

  • Hi Pawel,

In this instance, device configuration refers to when the VCO frequency is changed. To achieve the desired glitch-less operation, only make changes to the numerator of the feedback divider without adjusting the integer. The calibration time is less than the startup time of 10ms

    Kind regards,
    Lane
