LMX2820EVM: Lock / Unlock State Inconsistency

Part Number: LMX2820EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMX2820

Hey team,

I have a customer who is having some odd issues with the EVM and as a new hire I'm not too familiar with the device!

When they try to tune to 11.2GHz fundamental out, the lock is unstable.  Sometimes clicking calibrate on the GUI will result in a locked state, but sometimes it will result in an unlocked state.  It is about 50% unlocked vs locked.  We are using 100MHz reference input frequency and the reference X2 on for a PFD frequency of 200MHz.

When we try to get the doubled output at 22.4GHz (same 11.2GHz fundamental), then the chip never locks.  Interestingly, we only need to go down 30MHz to 22.37GHz (11.185GHz fundamental) and then it will lock every time.

I'm thinking there might be some harmonics or crosstalk that is occurring at the 11.2 GHz band. What are your thoughts?

Cheers,

Cameron

  • Hi Cameron,

Can you confirm if their LMX2820 device code shows PLMX2820 on the package? Prototype silicon has a known issue with achieving consistent lock at the high end of the VCO range across temperature, so this may be a manifestation of the same issue. Final silicon should have a fix for this.

    Regards,
