LMK04832: 2.5GHz output of LMK04832

Part Number: LMK04832

Hi, there :100

I use LMK04832 VCO0 to generate 2.5GHz output. Both CML and LVPECL format can

support the output frequency up to 2.5GHz/3.2GHz in data sheet. Does LVDS format

can also support the output frequency up to 2.5GHz/3.2GHz? The data sheet doesn't

specify this clearly. Please clarify & thanks.

  • Hello Yao-Hua,

At 2.5GHz, LVDS drive strength is insufficient to get a clean 2.5GHz waveform. Usually LVDS does not extend much past 800MHz.

HSDS has higher drive strength and a push-pull architecture. At 2.5GHz, the HSDS signal swing will be reduced, but reducing HSDS amplitude may bring it within LVDS levels at 2.5GHz. Note that if the clock stops switching for some reason (for example due to synchronization), the HSDS output levels will recover and this could exceed the limits of LVDS receivers, so be cautious. Fortunately there should never be a case where a divide-by-1 output must be synchronized, and I can't think of another case where the VCO would spontaneously stop switching, so this concern is minor.
