LMK04832: TIDA-01442 reference design Y1 oscillator device

Part Number: LMK04832
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01442,

In TI LMK reference design (document #:TIDA-01442) schematic page 6, oscillator (Y1 --CYHD-950-100.000) in schematic is six-pin package. But vendor CRYSTEK data sheet for this device is four pin out package. DO you have a special customer design from the vendor for this device? Any explanation about this? Device data sheet is attached here

Thanks,

Jimmy

  • Jimmy,

At the time of design, Crystek offered a six-pin device with the same footprint, differential output stage, and slightly worse performance. As we were designing the EVM, the CVHD-950 line was released, with better performance than previous devices, for the same footprint. The 4-pin device is basically the same as the 6-pin, just single-ended instead of differential. The footprints are compatible, and the 4-pin can be used in place of the 6-pin device without issues as long as the LMK04832 OSCIN_N is connected to the oscillator output pin. Based on the schematic for TIDA-01442, which connects OSCIN_P to GND through 0.1µF and DNP all other components in the path to Y1 pin 5, it looks like this change has already been accounted for.

In other words, there is no special reason for 6-pin footprint other than backward compatibility with old designs during development.
