LMK01000EVAL: frequency divider evaluation board with good phase noise

Part Number: LMK01000EVAL
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMK01000, LMK01801

Hi,

For my application, I need frequency divider which divides frequency of input signal from signal generator. I find some evaluation board LMK01000EVAL and LMK01801EVAL. Also, good phase noise performance is important. I want to make sure that if these two evaluation boards meet my need. Besides, if there are any evaluation boards  recommended, could you share with me. Thank you!

  • Hello Libby,

To suggest the best part for your application, could you please provide the following information:

    - Output frequency desired

    - Phase noise (i.e what does "good phase noise performance" mean)

    - Input type

    - Output types and amount of each

    - Pin-to-pin compatibility

    Thanks,

    Andrea

  • Hi Andrea,

The following are some information about my application

    output frequency : >200MHz

    phase noise : < -150dBc @1M offset (when signal oscillates at 40MHz)

input : sine or square input

    input frequency : >1GHz

output : sine or square wave

    output numbers : >=1

Pin : SMA signal input, SMA signa output

Please tell me if there is information unclear.

    Thanks,

    Libby

  • Hello Libby,

To directly answer your question, the LMK01000 won't work for your application because it does not have a divider value at any output that will result in 200 MHz from a 1GHz signal. You need a divider value = 5 and the LMK01000 divider values cannot be programmed to that value.

Instead, I recommend you use the LMK01801 (EVM link) since it's our only part that has the divider you require and meets your input frequency requirement. Hope this helps!

    Good Luck,

    Andrea

  • Hi Andrea,

Thanks for your suggestion. The divide value has not to be 5, even value is also used. From  LMK01000 data sheet, it can provide this function as well. And the spec meets my application, too.

I want to make sure if my opinion is correct.

    Thank you for your patience.

    Libby

  • Hello Libby,

If you don't need exactly 200 MHz and just anything higher than that, then you should be fine. Again, I do want to note that the dividers allowed by this device will limit which outputs you will get (only 500 MHz and 250 MHz with a 1 GHz input). Also, unfortunately, I do not have the exact data for the phase noise you are looking for at 40 MHz + 1 MHz offset. When you say the part meets your specs, did you also measure this? If so and the parts meets your phase noise requirement, then this part could also meet your requirements. Hope this helps!

    Good Luck,

    Andrea
