[FAQ] Clock Buffers: Can my buffer handle an input while it is powered off?

If my buffer is powered off can an input go into the device without damaging it?

  • Please refer to the input requirements specified in the Electrical Characteristics of the datasheet. For some devices, the input levels are specified in reference to VDD, for example: 0.2*VDD to 0.8*VDD; or VDD-1.2V to VDD-2V.
Parameters specified in reference to a supply voltage generally indicate that the device has internal protection diodes between the pin and supply. Violating the input specifications can force the diodes into the forward bias region which can result in reliability issues or permanent damage to the device.
