ADS8168: About select the mode.

Hi team,

My customer wants to capture 16-bit data while switching MUX channels at 1Mhz intervals.
Which do you choose better, Manual Mode or On-The-Fly Mode?
Or, let me know if there is a better mode.

And then, what difference between Manual Mode or On-The-Fly Mode?
Could you tell me about the detail?

Sincerely.
Kengo.

  • Hello Kengo,

I recommend using Manuel Mode.  This provides 900nS of settling time for the multiplexor, as well as 300nS for the ADC input.  The tradeoff is that the data is not available until two cycles later, but it allows use of a lower speed amplifier driving the multiplexor input verses using on-the-fly mode.

The advantage of on-the-fly mode is that the data is available in the next immediate cycle, but the total available time for the mux to settle is now 300nS.

Since the customer wants to operate at full 16b performance and maximum data rate of 1MSPS, the manual mode will provide the best performance.
