DAC8830: Recommended Output Buffer & Filter

Part Number: DAC8830
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5122

I am looking to use DAC8830 with sampling rate of 512ksps, input signal bandwidth up to 200kHz. Does TI have recommendations on appropriate buffer amplifier IC, as well as output filter design?

Thanks!

  • Hi,

What kind of waveform are you trying to generate using DAC8830?

Based on that we can look into feasibility of using DAC8830 for this application and suggest filter design or the same.

    Regards,

  • AK,

Could be sine waves or more complex waveforms with signal bandwidth anywhere up to 200kHz bandwidth.

After some more investigation, I'm wondering if something like an audio-specific DAC capable of 768ksps sampling might be more appropriate, perhaps something from ESS Tech, as it appears TI doesn't have any products in this space..

  • I think it's important to consider what your distortion requirements will be when operating near your peak bandwidth. An audio DAC will not necessarily be better, but most audio jacks have an integrated interpolator with the digital filter that will add additional sample points even with a lower sample rate. For example the PCM5122 will interpolate any input signal to about 384k samples per second. So if you were trying to generate a 20K sine wave with a 48K sample rate it would still look like a sine wave.  Though if you were trying to represent an arbitrary waveform then the digital filter is not as effective.
