ADS1115EVM-PDK: EVM not Recognized, Disappearing from Device Manager and Powering Down

Part Number: ADS1115EVM-PDK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1115, TLA2024, ADS1015

Hi Team,

I am experiencing similar problems outlined in this E2E post. The ADS1115EVM-PDK is not being recognized by the GUI, I was able to follow the steps outlined in the post, however, I get to a point where the EVM powers down and I no longer see the "Generic Bulk Device" in Device Manager. I've updated the driver for this device using the usb_dev_bulk_comp multiple times. If you can lend some help debugging this issue, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1.) Get connection failure when starting GUI

2.) I am able to switch com ports, I see the warning about EVM unrecognized, close warning, and then see the below screen. I am also able to see the device in Device Manager at this point with the EVM powered on

3.) I go to File -> program device. EVM powers off (no lights on EVM) and is no longer shown in Device Manager

4.)  I am able to go to file - > program device again, select ADS1115, however, it doesn't matter since device is unconnected. Warning for unsuccessful flash shown. GUI automatically refreshes after a few seconds

Best Regards,

Vijay

  • Hi Vijay,

So at your current state, if you power cycle the PAMB(Disconnect then reconnect to PC), how does the device show up in the Device manager? If you can restart the process, can you try running the File --> Program step before selecting the COM Port and see if that makes any difference? In the meantime, I will try and get ahold of an EVM that is showing similar behavior so I can try and help with this process.

  • Thanks for the help Aaron.

In my current state, if I power cycle the PAMB, the device shows up again in the Device Manager the same as before:

Starting from the beginning, trying to run the File->Program step before selecting the COM Port doesn't work, as I am not able to select the Program Device option in the drop down menu:

From my current state, before power cycling the board, I can run the File->Program command and get the option to Select EVM Variant. If I select ADS1115 at this point, flash will fail as EVM is disconnected(EVM is connected to serial port, but lights are powered down and not showing up in Device Manager).

Before I select ADS1115 I can power cycle the board and lights come back on and it shows up in device manager. I still see the same screen as above. I can select ADS1115, the firmware update begins, but the flash is still unsuccessful and the GUI restarts after showing the error message.

  • Hi Vijay,

When you connect the PAMB to the PC, does it disconnect after a few seconds? I was able to get ahold of a board that was not programmed and was able to program it with no issues. I found that when I connected the EVM to the PC, it showed up as a Generic Bulk Device and after a few seconds, the lights to the EVM would go out and the board was no longer connected to the PC. It's then that I opened up the ADS1115 GUI and followed the programming sequence.

Additionally, it looks like you are using the TLA2024 EVM GUI software. Have you tried going to the ADS1115EVM-PDK product page and use the ADS1115 GUI? I would recommend trying that.

  • Hi Aaron,

When I connect the PAMB to the PC the lights come on and stay on until I try programming the Device on the GUI.

For me at least, when I use the Chrome the GUI appears as TLA2024 EVM GUI software, but when I use Edge the ADS1115 EVM GUI software is shown. I've been using Chrome to test, should I focus primarily on using Edge?

I am trying to rule out some basic issue that may be causing this. The TI Cloud Agent Bridge browser extensions have been installed and are enabled. Is there a way for me to check that I've properly installed TI cloud Agent on my pc?

  • Weird, so the first couple times I opened up the GUI on Edge it showed ADS1115 on the header of the page. Now it switched to TLA2024 after I unsuccessfully was able to connect the device. The same thing probably happened when I was using Chrome, but did not notice. The GUI continues to say TLA2024 even after I close and reopen the browser.

  • Hi Vijay,

It looks like the PAMB firmware is loaded but the EEPROM isn't. Since the firmware has the COM port accessible, there is something loaded. In the GUI, can you click on Help --> About and send a screen shot of the information found in the about page?

On the TLA showing up instead of the ADS, that should be okay actually. The GUI's are similar and the right version of the GUI should be loaded based on the EEPROM. Google Chrome should be fine since that is what I primarily use with our software.

  • Once I change the serial port to get the device connected, I see the below screenshot under Help-> About. If don't change the serial port there are no Connected Hardware Details.

  • Hi Vijay,

Thank you for confirming. Based on the information in the image, it looks like both the firmware and EEPROM are incorrect. Can you check the device markings on the IC to make sure there is actually an ADS1115 on the EVM? If the IC markings indicate it is an ADS1115, then we will need to reprogram the board. To do this, you need to use the programming option in the GUI.

Now I know this doesn't work for you so we may have to manually install the necessary drivers prior to running the program device feature in the GUI. I have attached a relevant E2E post that explains how to do so here. Let me know if there is any progress.

  • Hi Aaron,

I confirmed the markings on the device "N4J" are for the ADS1115.

I am able to update the driver for the WinUSB Generic Bulk Device and for the Serial COM Port Device. I have been unable to update the driver for the Tiva Device Firmware Update Device. I can't locate it in the Device Manager. I checked under multiple tabs,  including under Other Devices, but have been unable to locate the Tiva Device Firmware Update Device. Can you help with updating/locating this device so the driver can be updated?

  • Hi Vijay,

Thanks for the update. I will provide some instructions on how to proceed.

    1. We need to force the PAMB board into DFU test mode. To do this, please follow the below instructions in the following Word document. Please note that if the device manager just shows an 'Unknown Device' then you need to manually install the boot_usb.inf file.

Hardware method for forcing PAMB into DFU mode.docx

    2. Once the steps are complete, Then you should now be able to program the device by going to File --> Program Device and select the appropriate device.

    3. After the firmware has been updated, you need to program the EEPROM. First select the proper COM port and then enter developer mode by pressing CTRL+ ALT + D. You can then go to Tools --> Write EEPROM.

That should be it. Please let me know if you are still facing some difficulty with this.

  • Hi Aaron,

I able to get to step 7 in the guide for step 1 of the e2e post above. The GUI does not detect the DFU device and ask if I would like to update the firmware. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Do you think this could be a problem with my desktop setup?

  • Hi Vijay,

Are you able to clock on File --> Program Device or is it still unavailable?

    Regards,
    Aaron Estrada

  • Hi Aaron,

File--> Program Device is available. When I click it, I get the screen for ADS1015 and ADS1115 below. If I click one of the options, the flash is still unsuccessful. I also want to note that the daughter card is not connected during this.

  • Hi Vijay,

Sorry to see you are still having issues with this. We discovered that there was actually an update to the TI Cloud Agent and it's possible that something could be missing from the download and installation of the agent. Because of this, can you try and separately download the driver package at the link below? Note that you will need administrator privilege's to install from the link below.

     https://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/esd/cloud/driver_pkg/index.html

Once installed, please start the GUI with both the EVM and daughter card connected and see if you can now go to File --> Program Device. If this still fails, then we can also try running the GUI locally. To do this, please go to the following link: https://dev.ti.com/gallery/ . Once there, you can search for ADS1x15 and hover over the download symbol and click Windows.

Go through the installation process and try running the GUI offline and programming the PAMB. Let me know is there is any success in this. Programming the firmware and EEPROM should not be a difficult task so it's good for us to know exactly why this is more difficult that it should be. Can you answer/confirm the following questions as well?

    • Do we know for sure that the device is enumerating to a DFU class device on USB in Device Manager?
    • Do we know if you get the initial flash update box with the spinning wheel after selecting the desired download is selected? Or does it just hang?
    • Do you get a firmware download failure message?

Thank you for your patience while we continue to work on getting this solved.

    Regards,

    Aaron Estrada

  • Hi Aaron,

I am still working through these steps, not much luck so far. I'm working with the IT team to figure out how to download TI Cloud Agent with admin privileges'.

I tried to download the GUI for local use, but I have been unable to get the GUI to run after installation. This is the error message I am receiving:

I've also tried to run the compatibility mode for windows 7 and 8 and no luck either. In this case the program doesn't begin to open and no error message pops up.

    To answer your questions:

-Yes I think the device is enumerating to a DFU class device on USB in Device Manager. When I short the test pads lights go off, and Stellaris shows up in Device Manager when before it would not show up

-I get the initial flash update box with the spinning wheel.

-I then get a "flash unsuccessful failure"

Would you be open to a live debug call to make sure I am not missing anything?

    Best,

    Vijay

  • I was able to install the driver package with admin privileges. Still, I am not able to access directly File->Program Device on the GUI.

  • Hi Vijay,

Since we are taking this offline, I will close this thread for now.
