DAC8803: Serial clock frequency specification is unclear

Part Number: DAC8803
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC8814

Hi,

I would like to use the DAC8803 in a new design and I need to be able to clock it with at least 40MHz from an FPGA.

The datasheet's title page's Feature lists says the DAC8803 is compatible with a 50MHz SPI bus. But the interface timing specifications say the minimum Clock width high (and low) is 25ns, which would amount to a maximum clock frequency of 20MHz. (Please correct me if I am wrong on this)

The very similar DAC8814 can be clocked at 50MHz, and the document SLAA316 states the DAC8803 is clocked at 30MHz, so I am inclined to think that 50MHz is indeed possible, but would appreciate it if this can be confirmed.

Thank you!

  • Hi Hank,

I checked with the design team and they said there is a typo in the DAC8803 timing requirements. The 50MHz SPI speed is correct. The DAC8803 timing requirements are actually the same as the DAC8814, so you can refer to the timing requirements given in the DAC8814 datasheet.
