ADS1220EVM: ADS1220EVM - not able to generate output at ADC Pro kit - What's wrong

Part Number: ADS1220EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1220, ADCPRO

Hello,

I'm using ADS1220 EVM kit. I have connected it to ADC Pro. One kit able to give output on scope but unfortunately,

in another Kit, not able to get output.

Can you help to see attached photo and advice what wrong with second kit -which is not working.

Waiting for your reply.

  • Minesh,

    1.  Just to let you know, you will not be able to run two EVM at the same time.

    2.  I suspect that you plugged in the EVM after ADCPro was started.  You cannot unplug and re-plug this kind of EVM.  You must always plug the EVM into the USB port first, then start ADCPro.  When you do this ADCPro will search for the virtual COM port that the EVM has enumerated to.

    3. Even though the software says "connected", it is really not connected.  Sorry, this is misleading.  You can know that the EVM is not connected as the "collecting" progress bar moves very slowly when you press "Acquire".

    4. To make your second EVM work:

         a. Close ADCPro.

         b. Plug in your EVM.

         c. Start ADCPro and load the ADS1220 EVM plugin.

    I hope this helps!

  • Thanks for your advice.
But I have tried as you suggested,
    1) Plug in EVM,
    2) Open up ADC Pro software
    3) try to acquire data with same settings as I used for EVM1.
Note: I'm not doing EVM1 & EVM2  plug in together but doing it one by One
Still one kit called  EVM1 is working but EVM2 kit is not working what will be wrong? Please advice.

  • Minesh,

    1.  Thanks for your update.  It sounds like you are taking the correct approach.

    2.  Let's figure out if the issue is hardware configuration, hardware, or software / operational.

    3.  To make sure that the hardware configuration is not the issue, please make sure that you configure both EVMs using the jumper settings that you use on the working EVM.  It is possible that something is misconfigured and the device is not working because of that.  Do you have any external connections?

    4.  You should plug the device into the same port for both devices.  Technically this should not matter but let's do this so that we can make sure the port is working properly.

    5.  Below are some pictures to illustrate what should happen when you plug in the EVM.  You should use the windows "Device Manager" to help understand that you EVM is operating as expected.  When you plug the EVM in. the device manager will show it pop up as a "USB Serial Device".   Next start the ADC pro software and load the ADS1220 plug-in.  When the plug-in loads you should see it scan though all the COM ports until it finds the one with the ADS1220.  Once this finishes it will say "connected".  Finally, when you press "Acquire" it should take about 1 second to collect all the samples.  If it takes longer, this indicates that you don't really have a connection.

    6.  Let me know if your "bad" EVM takes a long time to scan or if it scans quickly.  Also, let me know if the connection process worked as the picture shows.

  • Hi Art Kay

Thanks for your reply and explanation

I checked CS and SCLK pin. Working kit has output on this two pins and faulty kit has no any output on CS and SCLK. It may be possible that Faulty kit has something wrong on this two pins. Hence output is not able to generate and we can't able to see output on ADC Pro Kit software.

  • Minesh,

Thanks for trouble shooting down to the communications.  The EVM should be tested during the manufacturing process.  I will send you an email to get your contact info.  We will ship you a replacement sample (no charge).
