ADS1299EEGFE-PDK: Weird noisy signal at inputs?

Part Number: ADS1299EEGFE-PDK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1299, ADS1298

Hello all,

I've been working with the ADS1299 demo board to measure ECGs and been having a very weird/noisy experience. The test signal is able to be generated and displayed perfectly, however when I use the normal channel operation, the signal is awful. We took the same exact setup and connected it to our ADS1298 setup, and the signal came through perfectly, so we know that the setup is okay. The data was all taken using the ADS1299 software for 10kS at a rate of 500Hz.

Figure 1: First ECG Attempt

Figure 2: Second ECG Attempt

Figure 3: Third ECG Attempt

In the figure 2, you can see the test signal in red and that is coming out perfectly fine. The last one is the only test with filters enabled.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Branden,

I assumed the testing was done with the ECG simulator. Can you provide the register setting for the ADS1299 EVM? Can you show the connection for the ADS1299EVM for your ECG setup?

    Thanks

  • These are live ECG with two patches placed on the wrists. The demo board is connected through the MMB0 board and connect to my computer.

  • Hi Branden,

    Thanks for the information.

I do not see any issue with the device register setting for the ADS1299. I think this is most likely due to the input channel configuration on the ADS1299EVM, which is not optimized for the ECG signals and with significant noise interference on the input. I am able to get a decent ECG signal with the ECG simulator on CH1, even at the highest gain of 24 using the ADS1299 EVM. As you may have noticed, the ADS1298 EVM design is slightly different than the ADS1299 EVM. The ADS1298 EVM has more input filtering optimized for the ECG signal, whereas the ADS1299 EVM only has a simple single-stage RC filter.

    Thanks
