ADS7046: Is it compatible with ADS7042

Part Number: ADS7046
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7042

We use the ADS7042 in our design. The ADS7046 seems identical except for the 3MSPS sample rate specification. Is that true. Will this part be compatible as a drop in replacement for ADS7042.

  • Hi Mark,

    Thank you for your post.

These devices are pin-for-pin compatible and will work as a solution to achieve increased throughput. The "Serial Interface Timing Diagram" drawings show a different number of required SCLK pulses per conversion period for each device, so just pay careful attention to these nuances when making the switch.

Let us know if you have any other questions about the interface differences.

    Best regards,

    Ryan

  • We are planning on running it at less then 1MSPS so that we have an alternate for supply chain flexibility. Would there be any concerns with SCLK pulses in that case. Would we need to modify the firmware that is controlling it?

  • Hi Mark - it's not the data rate difference that's important. Unfortunately, the number of SCLK edges required during the conversion phase is slightly different between these two devices. The firmware would have to be updated to account for this.

    ADS7042: 14 SCLKs (minimum)

    ADS7046: 15 SCLKs (minimum)

    Best regards,

    Ryan

  • We use 16 SCLKs (2 bytes) to transfer right now with the ADS7042 and shift the result 2 bits, so I think we're OK.
