ADS7142: Calibration

Part Number: ADS7142

The ADS7142 data sheet section 7.3.2 says that the offset can be calibrated by setting the TRIG OFFCAL bit.

it goes on to say ‘the device calibrates the offset on power up’

My question is: Will the device calibrate the offset on every power up regardless of whether TRIG OFFCAL bit is set? Or must the TRIG OFFCAL bit be set followed by a repower of device in order to trigger a calibration?

Thanks.

  • For clarification. The above flow chart says that after power up the Offset calibration is optional. Does that mean calibration is not automatic at power up?

We are operating as an ADC on a data logger and the device is  powered on for each sample and used in I2C mode. We had assumed that the offset calibration was automatic on each power up but are now wondering if we must explicitly ask for calibration after each startup using TRIG OFFCAL bit.

    please confirm.

    many thanks

  • Hello James,

The device indeed does perform an offset calibration at power up.

Recycling power on the AVDD pin and on General call(00h) followed by software reset (06h), all the device configurations are reset, and the device initiates offset calibration and re-evaluates its I 2C address.

I cannot find the image you shared in the current datasheet - click here-, updated on Dec 2017. Is it possible you are referring to an older version of the datasheet where this, admittingly confusing detail, was corrected?

    Regards
