My customer just needs to know if the metal on the top of the device is electrically connected to anything, or if it’s floating. If it’s floating, and greater than 0.3cm^2, then they need to ground it.
Any recommendation on your side is appreciated.

The ADS1278-EP is an enhanced plastic package, and does not have any exposed metal on the top side of the package. Since the standard commercial version and the -EP version use the same package drawing, you can refer to the ADS1278 datasheet for more details on the connection of the heat pad to the ground plane.
If the customer is looking at the ADS1278-HT or ADS1278-SP versions, then these devices use a ceramic package with a metal lid. For both of these devices, both the thermal pad and the top side metal lid are connected to the ground leads of the device, and are not floating.
