DAC8218: Comparison with DAC8718

Because of the supply chain issue with the DAC8718, we plan to use the DAC8218.

The DAC is only used to test ADCs in our Controller Board (so the resolution of 14-bit or 12-bit is also ok).

It is written in the datasheet, that the DAC8218 is pin-to-pin and function-compatible with the DAC8718 (16-bit) and the DAC7718 (12-bit).

Can you guarantee, that it will work in the same way and I do not have to do any changes in hardware and software code?

    Hi David,

    Yes, the DAC8218, DAC7718, and DAC8718 are pin-to-pin and function-compatible. If you are ok with the slight spec and resolution differences then you will be able to use the devices interchangeably with the same software. 

    You can see in the register map that the 12-bit data for the DAC7718 that the last 4 data bits are don't care bits. The DAC7718 will ignore the last 4 bits and act like a 12-bit device if you were to write the 16 bit data that you used for the DAC8718:
