ADC12J4000: Automatic gain control for Oscilloscope Front-end

Part Number: ADC12J4000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00826, LMH6401, ADC3662,

On the TIDA-00826 reference design, an LMH6401 is used on an automatic gain control (AGC) loop with ADC ADC12J4000. Why is this block necessary on an oscilloscope front-end stage? If I need less bandwidth, and I would like to use ADC3662 instead, is the automatic gain control (AGC) loop necessary?
