AFE58JD48EVM: data capture EVM compatibility

In the user's guide for AFE58JD48EVM, the only compatible data capture board mentioned is TSW14J56. However, this board appears to be obsolete as its product page no longer exists. I see no mention of other data capture boards in the user's guide or other web pages related to this AFE. TSW14J50 and TSW14J57 seem like they may be compatible, but there is a large price difference between the two. Are either or both of these compatible? In my use case, I do not expect to capture the full 125 Msps on all 16 channels at once, so the lower total throughput of the J50 would not be a concern.

    I am sorry to hear about this issue. 

    So currently we have the firmware developed for JESD capture with TSW14J56 and LVDS capture with TSW1400.

    However recently TSW14J56 has become obsolete. The TSW14J50, TSW14J56 and TSW14J57 has Arria series Intel's FPGA but they are different. TSW14J56 uses Arria V while TSW14J57 uses Arria 10. We know from first cut that they should be compatible but so far, any development effort has not been made to make the existing JESD firmware work with J57. Hence, at this moment I cannot confirm you whether it will definitely work.

    So, if you just want to evaluate AFE58JD48 performance, you can use LVDS with TSW1400. And meanwhile, TI is planning to see and evaluate which option to support further with the AFEs in the long run.

  • Abhishek, thanks for the clarification. I did not see TSW1400 mentioned in the user's guide either, so I wasn't aware that was an option. I think the TSW1400 would work for me as long as I could sample at least 2 channels at the full 125 Msps rate with it.

    Yes, the device has LVDS interface which can run up to 1.28 Gbps. 

    So, definitely you can run the device at 125 Msps and capture the same using TSW1400 LVDS capture solution.

    Btw, for your information. The J50, J56 and J57 are all for interfacing with JESD 204B.

  • I've started considering the J57 more seriously since it seems the raw sample capture transfer rate over USB is extremely slow for the J50 and TSW1400. Being able to post process the raw samples is fairly important to me.

    Could you help me understand what I might expect if I try to get the J57 working with the AFE58JD48EVM? My guess is it would involve downloading the Quartus project for the J56 (it seems like that is available through E2E based on this thread), reconfiguring some project settings for the J57, and re-generating the bitstream. Of course there could be issues I'd need to troubleshoot after testing with the EVMs. I assume I would need a paid Quartus license to accomplish this. Does this sound correct? Is there anything else I should be aware of? It seems like a fairly straightforward process, with the main obstacle being the additional cost of a Quartus license.

    Another note: I am also open to using the AFE58JD28EVM if it makes things any simpler.

    AFE58JD48 can be tested with TSW1400, TSW1450 or TSW14J56. We havent brought up the EVM with TSW14J57 yet. I have assigned this thread to Praveen and he will get back to you by Tuesday after checking TSW14J56 availability.

  •  I didn't expect the J56 to be available but thanks for checking. Could you respond to my question above? If I want to get a J57 and run it with the AFE58JD48EVM, what specifically would I need to do? Abhishek's initial response seems to imply that I could try the J57 and I might be able to get it to work.

    I've been at the point of purchasing one of the data capture EVMs, and it's between the TSW1400 and TSW14J57. I'm just waiting for more detail on this question.

    I checked and unfortunately TSW14J57EVM is also back logged and out of stock and the anticipated restock date is Feb 2024.

    So for now it seems like TSW1400 is the only available choice.
