ADS1278-SP: Using ADS1278SHFQ for the EM board with ADS1278MHFQ-MLS for Flight

Part Number: ADS1278-SP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1278-HT, ADS1278-EP

I am designing a radiation hardened board for flight that will have use ADS1278MHFQ-MLS. But because ADS1278MHFQ-MLS is very expensive I bought ADS1278SHFQ to use for the Engineering Model board for testing. However, I just realized that ADS1278SHFQ has the generic part number of ADS1278-HT while the generic part number for ADS1278MHFQ-MLS is ADS1278-SP. So, I wanted to know what are the differences between ADS1278-HT and ADS1278-SP and whether I could use ADS1278SHFQ for Engineering Model of the board that will use ADS1278MHFQ-MLS for the Flight?

  • Hello,

Welcome to the TI E2E community!

The ADS1278HFQ/EM (ADS1278-SP) and the ADS1278SHFQ (ADS1278-HT) have identical specifications at 25C, and both share the same package and pinout.  There may be differences in the internal construction of both devices, but functionally, at room temperature, they will behave the same.

The advantage of using the engineering version of the ADS1278-SP device is that it is the same die and package as the flight version; however it does not go through the same process flow and is only tested at 25C.  The below application note provides some more detail on the differences.

  • Thanks Keith. But the sampling rate for the two chips is different, right? I think for ADS1278HFQ/EM (ADS1278-SP) the sampling rate is max 128kSPS but for ADS1278SHFQ (ADS1278-HT) it is 144kSPS.

  • Hello N.S.,

Only the commercial grade version of the device supports 144ksps.  All high reliability versions (ADS1278-HT, ADS1278-EP, ADS1278-SP) are limited to 128ksps.

Please note that if using SPI mode for communications, maximum data rate for any version of the device is limited to 105ksps, due to the maximum clock frequency limit of 27MHz.  In order to increase speed above 105ksps, frame-sync communications mode must be used.

    Keith
