ADS8688: How to estimates latency in Channel Sequencing Modes?

Part Number: ADS8688
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS131A04, ADS131E08,

Hi expert,

I would like to set ADS8688 in Channel Sequencing Modes for 2 or 4 channels. I think the latency should be (acquisition time + conversion time + SPI trasmission time) mutipled by 2 or 4 channels. Is it correct? I think its latency/delay is much faster than ADS131A04 and ADS131E08

Thanks.

  • Hi Di Wang,

The ADS8688 is a SAR converter while the ADS131A04 and E08 are Delta-Sigma type converters.  For the Delta-Sigma type converters, latency is relative to the OSR of the device and the converters need to acquire multiple samples before its able to provide a proper conversion result.  SAR converters on the other hand, take a single sample that is converted and then presented to the output data buffer.  Latency is not really something that is relative to SAR converters unless you absolutely need to acquire sample N+1 before you can get the conversion results of sample N.  Long story short, yes, you will have the conversion results with a delay of tCONVERT plus tTRANSFER as you stated above.
