ADS6145: Advantages/disadvantages of RF-Transformer Based Drive Circuits described in DS

Guru 11255 points
Part Number: ADS6145
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS4509,

Hi,

As a reference circuit for single-ended input in the ADS6145 data sheet, there are Figure 96 for conversion using a transformer, Figure 97 for conversion using two transformers, and Figure 98 for conversion using the THS4509. Could you tell me the merits and demerits of each of Figures 96 to 98? In particular, I would like to know the difference in strength of noise, etc.

 - Figure 97.Two Transformer Drive Circuit
 - Figure 98. Drive Circuit Using the THS4509

Thanks,

Eevee

  • Hi Eevee,

The main difference between using a single transformer or balun is to improve the phase imbalance. Poor phase imbalance manifests itself as even order distortion or HD2.

If you need more signal gain, then use an amplifier on the frontend instead of a balun/transformer.

I have summarized all these differences in the following paper if interested. See link below:

    Thanks,
