ADS127L01: How to implement isolation?

Part Number: ADS127L01
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO6762, ADS127L11, ISO6741

Hi Team,

My customer who is doing motor drivers and they are interested in using ADS127L01, They think that the ENOB and SNR are good for their application,

However, isolation is a significant concern for motor drive applications given that the ADS127L01 is not an isolated ADC (e.g., as opposed to AMC3306). Here, I think the datasheet of ADS127L01 suggests that isolation can be implemented in the digital domain, e.g., from the SPI outputs. Do you have any reference design how this can be achieved?

Please kindly advise.

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Ernest

  • Hello Ernest,

We do not have any example reference designs using the ADS127L01 and isolation.  However, you are correct, that the ADS127L01 can be configured in SPI mode and either 4 or 5 IO lines can be used for communications.  The ISO6762 can be used to provide up to 6 lines of communications.

However, I would suggest looking at the newer ADS127L11.  The ADS127L11 is the latest generation part in this ADC family, and can be operated over 4-wire SPI, by sharing the SDO pin with DRDY.  The 4 signals would be /CS, SCLK, SDI, and SDO.

An example isolation device that would work well with the ADS127L11 is the ISO6741.
