ADS1231REF: Freezes anytime a button is pressed

Part Number: ADS1231REF

Hello,

I have a ADS1231REF board that freezes anytime I use any buttons. If I am in scale mode and try to calibrate, the lcd freezes. If I am in analysis mode and I try to change the unit, it freezes as well. Once the display freezes, I cannot switch modes. I must power cycle the board to do anything. Any way I can fix this? I am using a brand new 9V battery for power. Thank you.

  • Hello JZ,

It is possible this is ESD related.  I would suggest working with the board at an ESD safe station to minimize any possible effects.

There is also the possibility that something is damaged on the board.  When using the 9V battery, the power is routed through the external power connector, J2.  I suggest either using an external power source, or, you could short the negative connection of the battery directly to ground to ensure a solid connection.

Please let me know if either of these suggestions help.

  • Hello Keith,

Thank you for reaching out. I will order an external power source for the kit and try that out.

  • Hi JZ,

O.K.  That would be a good next step.  Please let me know if you continue to have problems with the board.

    Regards,
    Keith

  • Hello Keith,

I purchased a 9v external power source and plugged it into the board. Unfortunately, the board still freezes. I will try shorting the negative connection of the battery directly to ground and report back my results.

  • Hi JZ,

Please make sure SW9 is in the left position (JTAG Mode)  The USB position will power the board from the USB port, and will not work correctly.  The USB PROG MODE is only used to program the MSP430 on the board and not power the rest of the EVM.

    Regards,
    Keith

  • Hello Keith,

I do have SW9 in the left position. Also, I shorted the negative connection of the battery to ground. The board is still freezing.

  • Hi JZ,

Best guess is this is still ESD related.  I suggest using the EVM GUI over USB to validate operation in analysis mode.  In this case, you do not need to physically touch the board once everything is connected.

The software will allow collection, analysis, and recording of data.
