SN65HVD31DR for RS232

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MAX3221E, MAX3221, TRSF3221E, MAX3221-EP

Hi,

I am using this RS422 Transceiver for communication link of CAMLINK Interface. However, customer has now realized that communication link is RS232 & not RS422. Is there any pin/footprint compatible (or very close to this part) RS232 transceiver?

Best regards,

Bhagavath

  • Hi Bhagavath,

No - RS-422/485 are not going to have devices that are footprint compatible to RS-232 devices. They are very different and have different architectures.

What are the requirements of the RS-232 bus in terms of speed (data-rate) and configuration (how many TX and RX channels are needed)

    Please let me know!

  • Hi Parker,

Thanks for your response. Speed is not a concern & only one RS232 Tx/Rx is needed.

  • Hi Bhagavath,

With that being said I do think we have a few options - but I will preface by saying they aren't directly footprint compatible because the RS-232 devices have an integrated charge pump that require 4 external capacitors. In this specific configuration (1T1R) all of our devices have an auto-powerdown function but it can be disabled if unwanted.

A few potential options are shown below:

MAX3221 and MAX3221E (the "E" has enhanced ESD protection - but besides that very similar) - these devices can operate at up to 250kbps data rates.

TRSF3221E is very similar except it can operate up to 1Mbps

All of these devices are available in C (commercial) and I (Industrial) temperature ratings- so 0C to 70C for Commercial and -40C to 85C for industrial.

If you require a wider temperature range we do have 1 option in this which is the MAX3221-EP - which is 250kbps and the most expensive option we have (about 3x to 5x as expensive as our other devices due to it being a high reliability device).

One of these devices should meet the needs - and they all work at 3.3V supply - which is what the original RS-422/485 part was working at.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Thanks a lot Parker for your support.
