AFE5832LP: AFE5832

Part Number: AFE5832LP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE5832

Hi Sir/Madam,

We recently came across a problem of dramatic higher power consumption using AFE5832 than before.

Because we currently transfer the beamformed ultrasound data to upper computer via USB line by line, the power consumption of AFE 5832 and Xilinx’s Artix7 increases significantly compared with the power consumption by transferring data frame by fram (each frame contains 128 lines) used before. Are there any methods to reduce the power consumption of AFE5832 under our current transfer approach?

Thank you very much for your helps!

  • Hi,

The power consumption of AFE should not change based on what method has been adopted on back end to transfer the data if AFE is always active. You can first see which power rail power is increasing and based on that look at the block to optimize the power.

  • Hi Shabbir,

Thank you for your kind replies. SInce we recieve the ultrasound signals line by line and transfer these to uppor computer during our ultrasound scanner development with AFE5832,  the AFE5832 is supposed to be not always active. Under this condition could you please give me more detailed information and guidance regarding to how to configure and set values of AFE5832 registers. Besides these, are there any other potential methods to control power consumption of AFE5832 or  FPGA to control power consumption.

Thank you very much again for your kind helps!

  • Hi,

To save power, you can consider powering it down when AFE it not in use. Below table in the datasheet explain different way to power down different blocks of the AFE.

  • Hi Shabbir,

Thank you very much for your patient guidance and help. If I want to better control power consumption of AFE5832, do I also need to configure and set values to ADC block as power-down modes according to Table 26 of the datasheet besides VCA block as you mentioned previously. Also, how to configure and set registers of all the AFE5832 blocks in power-down mode  when users of the medical ultrasound are not using it to scan human organs, which means the AFE5832 can be at rest or in power-down mode.

    Thnak you very much again!

    Sincerly,

  • If you see in above table picture I shared from datasheet has one column explaining the control type. Either it is pin or register. If it is pin then you have to apply logic "1" level on pin to power down the device. If register then in datasheet you can refer to register map section to know the location of bit. You can program the mentioned bit using SPI control lines. Ideally using global power down is best to power down the device but it will come with larger power up time. If you want quick power up time then use fast power down mode. The power up time numbers are mentioned in the datasheet electrical char table.
