ADS8866: Regarding operating temperature

Part Number: ADS8866
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS8689

Hello team,

I have a question about ADS8866. Could you please help me with the answer?

Currently, there are customers who want to use products with Ads8866 at high temperatures.
The operating temperature of Ads8866 is stated to be up to 85 degrees, but actual testing in that environment shows that the case temperature of Ads8866 remains above 90 degrees.
Temperatures of up to 105 degrees have been seen in some cases.

Some reduction in accuracy at high temperatures can be tolerated, but serious problems such as failure should not occur. Therefore, I would like to inquire as follows.

1) For other products, Junction or Case temperature specifications are displayed, but Ads8866 is not displayed. Please tell me the Tj or Tc temperature of Ads8866.

2) Is there a product that is pin-to-pin with Ads8866 and can operate at high temperatures?

Best Regards,
Hongseok

  • Hello Hongseok,

We only specify ambient temperature since the ADS8866 is very low power and there will be very little difference between the junction, case, or ambient air temperature.  If there are other heat sources where the board temperature can be higher than the ambient air temperature, you should then limit the maximum case temperature to 85C.  In other words, ambient is the maximum allowed temperature of the device, including the case and surrounding air temperature.

It is unlikely that elevated case temperature of 105C will cause any long term reliability issues, but, based on the data available, we can only ensure operation up to 85C (case or ambient).

Unfortunately, we do not have any pin-to-pin package devices that are rated at higher temperatures.  ADS8689 may be of interest.  16b, 100ksps, with integrated PGA.
