ADS1234: Refernce input of ADS1234

Part Number: ADS1234
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMUX1109

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am planning to use ADS1234 to read 4 load cells each has 6 wire output. I am not sure how to use REFP and REFN inputs. Each load cell has its own REF output and ADS1234 has single REF input. Should I use a mux for reference outputs?  Can you help me to find a solution without increasing noise of circuit?

Thanks,

Mehmet

  • Hello Mehmet,

If each load cell is the same type, and the cable type and length are approximately the same, then you can connect 1 of the 4 load cell REFs back to the ADC reference inputs, and leave the rest of the REF outputs on the other 3 load cells as no-connects.  This will not provide the best possible accuracy, but it will compensate for most of the cabling errors.

If you need best possible accuracy on all load cells (or you are using different load cells or different cable lengths), then an external mux will be required.  Assuming you are using 5V load cell excitation, then the TMUX1109 would be a good fit for your application.
