TLA2518: Comparing TLA2518 and ADS7038

Part Number: TLA2518
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7038, ADS7028

Tool/software:

Hi,

I'm wondering if you can tell me the differences between the TLA2518 and ADS7038? At first glance, they appear to almost be drop in compatible.

Additionally, would you be able to go into some more detail about how the internal averaging works? Specifically, the method of averaging taking place inside the device and why this would matter/how it would affect application performance.

Thank you!

  • Hi Abi,

Take a look at this E2E post for details. Let me know if there's something specific that Colin didn't answer.

    Joel

  • Hi Joel, thank you for the link that helps. Would you also be able to comment on the internal averaging method? And how that would impact the product application if at all?

  • Hi Abi,

To touch up on that, internal averaging is done through oversampling, effectively enhancing resolution. The programmable averaging filter is described in section 8.3.5 of the datasheet. Rather than taking one sample(one snapshot) of a signal, the averaging filter allows the user to take many samples in quick succession of a signal, then averages them together. These conversions are triggered by an internal oscillator rather than an external SCLK.

By oversampling and then averaging, we can reduce the impact of noise in our signal. Take a look at this Improving Resolution of SAR ADC Application Report for a deeper exploration of the theory behind it. Let me know if you'd like more specific information relating to enabling oversampling with the ADS7038.

    Joel

  • Hi Joel, perfect! Thank you for your help. To summarize, the TLA2518 and ADS7038 are drop-in compatible and can be used for swapped for second sourcing purposes. Then the ADS7028 could also be used as an alternative. If I'm mistaken, let me know but otherwise I appreciate your insights!

  • Hi Abigail,

Yes, if the customer opts to not utilize the full feature set of the ADS7038, the TLA2518 is a functional replacement.
