ADS114S08: ADS114S08 with bipolar supplies and ground biasing

Part Number: ADS114S08

Tool/software:

Hello,

I have a question regarding schematic 2.7.1 in the Application Node "A Basic Guide to Thermocouple Measurements", SBAA274A, REVISED MARCH 2023.

In chapter 2.7: ‘Thermocouple Measurement With Bipolar Supplies And Ground Biasing’ I find the following circuit diagram:

Thermocouple Measurement With Bipolar Supplies And Ground Biasing

Why the REFCOM input is connected to GND here? Is this an error in the circuit diagram?

Connecting REFCOM to GND does not make sense to me for the following reasons:

  • according to the data sheet table ‘Pin Functions’ (page 4), the description of REFCOM says ‘Negative voltage reference output. Connect to AVSS’. AVSS is -2.5V here.
  • REFOUT would then be 2.5V above REFCOM, and therefore in the near of AVDD. Presumably it would then no longer be possible to measure it.

Should REFCOM be connected to -2.5V instead?

Thank you, Gerrit.
