DAC8760: Functional safety details

Part Number: DAC8760
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC161S055, , AFE88201

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

One of my customer is looking for the DAC with functional safety capablities. They have zero down on DAC8760 and DAC161S055. Are these DACs are capable of functional safety?

If not what are the options?

Regards

Mitesh

  • Mitesh,

At this point we have very few devices in DAC that are considered for use with Functional Safety. There are three categories of Functional Safety: Functional Safety-Capable (lowest), Functional Safety Quality-Managed, and Functional Safety-Compliant (highest). You can find the explanations here:

    https://www.ti.com/technologies/functional-safety.html

For Functional Safety-Capable, TI provides a Functional safety FIT rate calculation and a Failure mode distribution (FMD) and/or pin FMA. With these data, customers to do calculations for their own functional safety ratings based on analysis of the device operation.

For Functional Safety Quality-Managed, TI also provides more information with an FMEDA (Failure Modes Effects and Diagnostic Analysis) and Functional Safety manual. These documents give a bit more information about the device's internal workings and how potential failures may appear.

For Functional Safety-Compliant, the design of the device is done through a functional safety process, considering failures, checks, and recovery of the device. With a Functional Safety-Compliant device, a Fault-tree analysis (FTA) and Functional safety product certificate is also included with the device.

At present, there are no DAC devices that are Functional Safety Quality-Managed or Functional Safety-Compliant. There are a limited number of devices that are Functional Safety-Capable. You can see these here:

    https://www.ti.com/technologies/functional-safety/products.html#-5=Data%20converters&-3=Precision%20DACs%20(%E2%89%A410%20MSPS)&

Of these devices, the AFE88201 may be the closest device, but it is limited in output voltage range. To get a higher output voltage or current output range, you would need to construct an external output buffer. However, the device is design more for sensor transmitters than for analog outputs.
