ADS131M08: How to disable the digital filter (SINC3)

Hi,

We are currently testing a circuit using the ADS131M08IPBS. Through the test, I found that the input waveform (10kHz) had insufficient gain, which is causing problems.

I believe this is due to the built-in digital filter (SINC3). The SINC3 filter is an integral part of the device's operation for noise reduction and signal filtering, and cannot be completely disabled. Is my understanding correct? If so, is there anything I can do to address this issue (such as OSR settings)?

Thanks,

Conor

  • Hi Conor,

    your assessment is absolutely correct.
The SINC filter cannot be bypassed in ADS131M08 unfortunately. You could operate the device at its lowest OSR (= highest data rate) setting, but you will still see some significant attenuation of the 10kHz signal in that case.

A better solution would be a delta-sigma ADC with a flat passband digital filter, such as the ADS127L18. Those devices are designed for such tasks.
Another option would be to look at a SAR ADC.
