ADS127L21: ADS127L21EVM-PDK Software Buggy

Part Number: ADS127L21

Tool/software:

Hello,

We recently ordered ADS127L21EVM-PDK to operates urgent measurement of THD on our system. As startup we thought it is a good idea to go with this evaluation board to make our measurement. Unfortunately, we found that the software is verry slow and very buggy. Is it normal? Each time I hit capture it tooks too much time to get data. We aren't able to tell when it really starts capture? is it instantaneously after clicking capture button? Each time we modify a parameter we wait too much time after we can use the capture. I understand that it doesn't replace a 20k$ scope but it seems useless with all this delays. Please support us to use this solution.

Best regards

  • Hello Abderrezak,

The ADS127L21EVM captures a block of data (Samples setting), transfers over USB to your workstation, and then the GUI software runs an FFT and calculates all of the different parameters, such as SNR, THD, SINAD, and so forth.

There is a delay when pressing the 'Capture' button, but less than 100ms.  In order to transfer data over the USB bus (high-speed mode), process and display results in the GUI,  takes about 2 seconds.  The remaining time is the total capture time.  Using the default GUI settings of 16k samples and 512ksps data rate, you can expect about 2 seconds total time.  If you were to increase the number of Samples to the maximum supported by the EVM of 2M, you can expect a total time to display FFT and THD results of about 9 seconds.

Updating parameters/registers inside the ADC does take quite a bit of time, around 100ms per register, which is a limitation of the EVM architecture and not the ADS127L21 ADC.

This is how the EVM works and there is no easy way to increase the speed without a complete software/firmware change to the system.
