DAC34SH84: HSMC connector compatibility with Altera Cyclone V GX FPGA

Part Number: DAC34SH84
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC34H84,

Tool/software:

Hi all,

The description of this EVM states that "The DAC34SH84EVM includes an HSMC input for direct connection to HSMC compatible Altera based FPGA EVMs".

I want to connect this EVM directly (pin to pin via HSMC) to the Cyclone V GX Starter Kit (5CGXFC5C6F27C7N).

The problem is the DAC34SH84EVM has 180 pins while the Cyclone V GX has only 172 pins! Also, it seems that some ground pins of the DAC will be stacked to 3.3 volts on the Cyclone V GX.

Could you please tell me if there is a special version of the DAC EVM which is compatible with the Cyclone V GX ? Or instead, any solution to perform this association via HSMC connector.

Thanks in advance

     RE: DAC34SH84EVM HSMC compatibility

    -Kang

  • Hello Kang,

Unfortunately, there is no schematic of the DAC34SH84EVM HSMC connector to compare with the one of the Cyclone V GX starter kit. I need to know if the HSMC connector used int this DAC EVM is the ASP-176819-01 ? And if it is, is it compatible with the HSMC used in the Cyclone V GX starter kit (QSH) QTH-090-01-L-D-A-RT1 ?

    Any useful documentation is welcome.

    Best regards

  • Hi Foudil,

Here is the complete BOM with J13 connector part number. It is best that you reach out to Samtec support directly for compatibility information. I do not have such information.

  • Hi Kang,

Thank you for your quick reply!

The BOM you attached is for the DAC34H84EVM, whereas I was expecting the one for the DAC34SH84EVM. I found its BOM in a previous post, and it states that the J13 connector part number is QTH-090-01-L-D-A-RT1.

To summarize from the different BOMs:

    • The J13 part number of the DAC34SH84EVM is QTH-090-01-L-D-A-RT1

    • The J13 part number of the DAC34H84EVM is ASP-176819-01

    • The Cyclone V GX starter kit uses the ASP-122953-01

I have already contacted Samtec support for more information, but I still have one last question for you:

If I order a DAC34SH84EVM board today, which connector will it be equipped with — ASP-176819-01 or QTH-090-01-L-D-A-RT1?

    Best regards,

  • Foudil,

The Rev D EVM is shared between both DAC34H84 and DAC34SH84 EVM. It is the latest rev in the market. Therefore, you will be getting the ASP-176819-01 part.

    -Kang

  • OK Kang, thanks for the clarification.

Samtec told us that the ASP-176819-01 is proprietary to another customer, so we need a letter of authorization to obtain its print. Do you know whether TI is the proprietary customer mentioned by Samtec? If so, could you please check whether we can obtain the schematic for ASP-176819-01?

If TI is not the proprietary customer (or if the schematic is unavailable), do you have another EVM with an RF DAC that is compatible with ASP-122953-01 used in the targeted FPGA — even if it isn’t the DAC34SH84?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • I found in the DOCX document available at this post: [https://e2e.ti.com/support/data-converters-group/data-converters/f/data-converters-forum/619941/dac34sh84evm-problem-of-schematic-of-dac34sh84-and-fmc-dac-adapter], that DAC34H84/DAC34SH84 EVM REV C uses the ASP-122952-01 connector, which mates with the ASP-122953-01.

Could you please let me know if it is possible to order an EVM Rev C?
