TPS92542-Q1: Inquiry about Smaller Package LED Driver Alternative to TPS92542-Q1

Part Number: TPS92542-Q1

Hi,

We are currently evaluating TPS92542-Q1 as an LED driver solution. However, due to strict PCB space limitations, we would like to ask if there are any alternative devices in a smaller package that provide similar performance.

Our system requirements are as follows:

  • Input voltage: 24V

  • Output voltage: 48V

  • Output current: 2A

  • Channels: 4 or more (Currently using ADI LT3966, but facing thermal issues when using all 4 channels fully)

TPS92542-Q1 meets the channel requirement, but a smaller package would be ideal. If no 4-channel device is available, we also considered using two 2-channel devices. However, PCB space constraints make this option difficult.

Could you kindly suggest any smaller package LED drivers, or alternative architectures that would meet the above conditions?

Thank you very much for your support.

Best regards,

Conor

  • Hello Conor,

We don't have anything available in a smaller package  that includes a boost controller and two integrated synchronous CC bucks.  If you are already having thermal problems then making the design size smaller will make this worse. The 54x devices does use the top exposed thermal pad which provides better heat transfer to the heat sink, assuming go mechanical design.

I have some additional questions about this application.

    • You stated output voltage, is that the LED voltage? How many LEDs is it and what is the Vf of the LED at that output current setpoint?  We normally want to have a typ and max Vf.
    • Are you doing PWM dimming? or shunt fet dimming?  If so, what is dimming frequency and duty cycle range (min duty cycle is usually the most important.).
    • Are the four channels the same number of LEDs and thus the same VLED?
    • What is the max output power of the design?
    • What is the input voltage that the design has to provide full power (Vin min, typ max).
    • Do  you have the PCB board size that you need to the design to fit into?

If you don't want to share this information in this forum then we can go offline.  Keep in mind this is a gated part and we will need to ensure you have an NDA with us before we go to far into the design if you plan to use the TPS9254x devices.
