Hello, I am very new to using a data converter. I have a amplified and filtered EEG signal and the end goal is to get the signal to a computer for analysis. I am considering trying to use a data converter. What options are there to send the output of the ads1114 to a computer? Is a microcontroller required? Or what other type of hardware can be used? Any information or suggestions on the subject will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! I'm not sure if you are aware, but TI has parts specifically suited for EEG as a complete solution. Evaluation modules are available that can communicate directly with the computer to capture data.

I'm not sure that the ADS1114 is best suited for your application, but to communicate with the device you will need some other device to communicate to it as an I2C master. The simplest solution that I know of is by using the MSP430 Launchpad, which is a very inexpensive microcontroller suited for both the novice and the expert.

There are a variety of ways of getting your data to the computer. This will take some programming expertise. If you decide to go the Launchpad route, there are a number of posted projects and examples to help.

Thanks Bob,

I didn't realize made EEG/ECG specific data covnerters. I think the ADS1291 will be a great fit for my senior design project. If I understand you correctly, the output of the ADS1291 can be ran directly to the computer and once I brush up on my programming all should be well?

David, you can't directly connect the ADS1291 device itself to the computer, you will need an interface. Check out the ADS1292 demo board:
