Interfacing ADS8345 with DM3730CBP (BeagleBoard XM). Is that possible?

Hello fellow engineers

I am starting up a project where the BeagleBoard has been chosen to be the main platform. One task in the project is to convert analogue signals and transfer by SPI to the BeagleBoard. After spending some time searching, I have found some ideas, but no real solution.

We already have a ADS8345EVM, so I was wondering if this board can be used with a BeagleBoard without too much trouble. ADS8345 is typically supplied with 3.3v, but DM3730CBP is supplied by 1,8v, thus direct connection would not be possible without seeing blue smoke.

In my search I found ADS8363, which also would be a good choice of ADC, and with the nice feature of independently adjustable digital voltage level. Unfortunately the voltage levels on the digital side is adjustable down to 2,6v, which again is not enough.

Therefore, does anyone know of a simple solution to connect any of the two ADC's with the BeagleBoard by SPI?
Or even better; does anyone know of another AD Converter similar to ADS8345 or ADS8363 (preferably on eval board) that can be connected to DM3730CBP (BeagleBoard) by SPI without too much trouble?

/Rasmus

  • Hi Rasmus,

On the precision data converter side of Texas Instruments, we don't have too many devices that can operate at at 1.8V digital level.  Have you considered using a level translator between your Beagle Board and the ADS8345 or ADS8363EVM?  Something like the TXB0304 or TXB0104 perhaps?
