Question on the ADS8519 Typical App. Circuit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA132, ADS8519

The ADS8519 datasheet calls for using an OPA132 op-amp in an inverting configuration to provide a low-impedance source for the ADS8519. Could anyone explain to me why you would utilize an inverting config and not use a non-inverting config or unity gain? My concern with the inverting is mainly that I will be using the circuit for high precision measurements, but the device under test is unknown so if I have a high source impedance it will distort my measurement.

  • Hi David,

There are no great advantages to using an inverting op-amp driver in this case. It does provide lower distortion by holding the input common mode voltage at a constant value (0V in this case), but if you are only going to be doing DC measurements, you can use a non-inverting input driver as well. If you are concerned that your input signal source may have high output impedance it probably makes more sense for you to use the non-inverting configuration.

    Thanks,
    Harsha
