Does TI Downloader erase all flash content before re-programming?

Hi,

I am using TI downloader program to downlaod my firmware into the flash . Well there is the need to do programming same flash multiple time . I would like to know whether TI downloader erases all the previous content of flash before re-programming it or not?

Hi Asad,

Yes, the TI Downloader can erase the flash before the programming rewrite. It is required to erase the flash before reprogramming as you can only write a 0 to the flash (it will not write a 1.) The process is to erase the flash first to set the flash all high before it is programmed.

The same is true for using the flash as data storage. If you want to change a particular memory location in flash, you need to save the data in the page to a temporary location, erase the page, then rewrite the page with the new contents.

I was not precise in my question before, sorry about that. Infact, I would like to know that, for reprogramming a flash using TI downloader, the TI downloader will erase complete flash (32K in case of MSC1210Y5) OR it will erase only those portions/pages of flash which needs to re-written with new contents?

Please guide.

Hi Asad,

Unless you select the box to 'Limit Flash Erase', the command that is issued is 'M0000' which is the mass erase for all of the program memory.

Hi BOB and Asad,

I am making one Process control pilot plant, and i want to use MSC1210Y2 as a data acquisition and want to use 8051core to control few functions..

I am having no idea how to program this chip, Can you explain from level zero about how to download .hex file to this chip and thru which software/program .

I am having past experience of programming 8051MicroController on ready made boards available, it will be great help if you give brief idea about essential connections and supplies for this chip..

Hi Hardik,

Unfortunately there is very limited support for this family of devices. Most all available information can be found on TI's ftp server located at:

ftp://ftp.ti.com/pub/data_acquisition/MSC_CD-ROM/

The software available functions on XP, but doubtful on Win7. There are a couple of downloader programs available.

Well I was looking for the programmer too.

I tried many times but unfortunately I always get following message:

"The following error was encountered while trying to retrieve the URL: ftp.ti.com/.../MSC_CD-ROM
Connection to 192.91.75.223 failed.
The system returned: (111) Connection refused
The remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again."

Hi Nilesh,

I'm not sure what to tell you. I copied and pasted the browser information from a few posts back and I got directly to the contents page. I suspect you either have a firewall issue or an incorrect browser setting. This is assuming that you are using an actual computer and major browser (IE, Chrome, FireFox, etc.). If you are using a tablet/phone then I think you will need an ftp app for access.
