TPL0102 INPUT VOLTAGE

Hi there,

I have a question regarding the Voltage I can put on the part. P5 in the datasheet is confusing. The recommended voltages are 2.7V and 5.5V with Vss = 0, and for dual supply operation, +/-2.25V to +/-2.75V. The Max ratings show with Vdd to GND a 7V max, and with Vss to GND a -7V max.

It does not show recommended single supply if I use a negative voltage - like -5V, which is what I would like to use and not sure if this is possible. if it is not and I use +/- 2.5V, then is the I2C communication o.k. if I use 3.3V I2C? Is there a converter in the part if ave Bassettusing -5V only (if possible) so I can still communicate at 3.3V over I2C?

Hi David,

I apologize for the confusion, there are a two main considerations you will need to take into account when using dual supply. The recommended conditions are

2.7V < VDD-VSS < 5.5V
VDD > 2.25V

The second condition ensures that the digital functions operate on chip. This also shows that the TPL0102 does not support single negative supply. In regards to your I2C question. There is no internal converter, if you notice there is a VSS and a GND pin. All of the I2C logic is going to be referenced off of VDD to GND. So VIH and VIL are 0.7 * VDD and 0.3 * VDD respectively.

Another question about this problem:
In the data sheet under Absolute Maximum Ratings we find a maximum Digital input voltage of VDD + 0.3V. But under Recommended Operating Conditions the maximum Digital input High-voltage is 5.5V.
What is right? The first condition would mean, that the circuit in Dual-supply-mode (VDD=2.5V) cannot be controlled with a 5V- or 3.3V-logic.

Hi Chris,

Sorry about the confusion on the absolute max table. It was able to get an EVM and confirm that 5V/3.3V logic is okay with the ±2.5V supply configuration. Sorry about the delay!
