Do I need a device driver to use ADS1278 in linux

Hi all.

I am an undergraduate student in music technologies. I am building a controller that uses Pandaboard running Ubuntu 12.04 and ADS1278. I have the ADS1278 EVM/PDK. I am planning to connect it to Pandaboard via SPI.

I will use a software that reads that data out coming from the SPI port of Pandaboard. In this case, do I need a specific device driver for ADS1278 on Ubuntu or can I just use ADS1278 directly with only needed kernel modifications?

Please excuse my clumsiness and lack of knowledge.

As part of the data converter support team, we are not intimately familiar with the ins and outs of the Pandaboard. Typically, a processor just needs to implement the SPI protocol specified in the datasheet for communication with the ADC. You can potentially utilize some of the SPI functions that should be available with the support software for the Pandaboard. It may require reading the documentation to correctly configure the processor (frame size, valid edge, etc) for specific communication with the ADS1278.
