Basic Question about DAC8501

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC8501

Hi,

Let me ask you basic questions about DAC8501 as below.

Q1) the meaning of "Multiplying"

What is the meaning of "Multiplying"?

I suppose that the meaning is from "DAC output = Vref * DAC input code".

Is this correct?

Q2) Vref signal

Is it possible to use "sin wave" as an input to Vref?

That is to say, is it possible to use DAC8501 like "Vref(sin) * DAC code(DC=fixed code) = sin wave" ?

Q3) If Q2 is yes,

Is it possible to input "350KHz" sin wave to Vref ?

Q4) material

Do you have anything materials to explain "Multiplying DAC"?

Thank you for your support in advance.

  • Hi Suzuki-san,

Q1) Yes. You are correct. But this is limited by the bandwidth of the reference signal.

Q2) Yes. You can do that.

Q3) Yes, it is. But at this frequency you will see -3dB attenuation because it at the edge of the multiplying bandwidth.

Q4) You can take a look at this video that explains what Multiplying DACs are. You can also take a look at this TI Design which explains how to achieve a bipolar output from an MDAC.

This is a very old device. Which specifications are most important to you? I might be able to suggest a newer device with better performance. Some of the newer devices have a multiplying bandwidth of ~1MHz.

  • Hi Eugenio-san,

Thank you very much for your kindness!

    I understood well.

I will tell my customer that the device is very old and it maybe reconsider another newer device.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Regards,
