ADS1205 latch up

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1205

Dear Sir:

I am a engineer worked at Delta electronics in China. I use ADS1205 with FPGA to collect the high voltage of DC bus, grid or so on. Recently, I find that ADS1205 can suddenly latch up, which input clk is still the same of 20MHz,but output clk and dataA, dataB has disappear.I checked that the 5V Vcc is still normal. This case will happen suddenly and hard to find out. I want to know what kind of situation  this can happen and how to solve it, thanks a lot.

  • Hi User3867190,

Welcome to the e2e community! I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with the ADS1205. Is this a mature design or a new project you are working on? Can you describe under what conditions this latch-up occurs and what do you recover from the latch-up state?
  • Hi Tom,
I am so glad that you can give me a hand. This is a new project which contains ADS1205, but I have used ADS1205 for almost 3 years. Before, i use the internal clk of ADS1205, but now with the input clk from FPGA. When I use the probe of oscilloscope to detect somewhere of PCB, sometimes the ADS1205 suddenly stops working, which can be recoverd only with power on again. Usually, the power supply will output more power since ADS1205 stop working.
  • Hi user3867190,

This does sound strange, can you possibly send along a schematic showing the area around the ADS1205 and let me know where you were probing when this anomaly occurred?  I checked our Quality Control logs and there have been no other reports of this or similar problems.  Increased power consumption and the cycling of power to recover proper operation does sound like a latch-up issue though, so I'm interested in learning more about the specifics of your application.  If you'd rather not post the detail publicly, that is fine, just send me a friend request and we can take this off line.

  • Hi Tom,
Thanks for your attention. This morning I find that the 5V Vcc can suddenly drop when I drag or pull the ground wire of PCB, which the PCB input power supply is connected to the ground, and the ADS1205 can certain stop working. More seriously, the FPGA can also stop working, so i doubt that the power supply has dropped for a certain period, which is the reason why the ADS1205 latched. So is there any way to protect the ADS1205 from latch up,or to start again without power cycling? Thanks ~
  • Hi again!
Limiting the current to the ADS1205 to ~20mA by adding a series resistor in line with the AVDD supply should help. Is the digital supply still stable when this condition occurs?
