ADS1278 or similar EVM with higher bandwidth connection (USB 2.0)?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1278, ADCPRO, ADS1278EVM-PDK

I have been looking at the ADS1278 and its EVM, which looks to use the MMB0 board for interfacing to the PC with ADCPro. The concern is that the MMB0 seems to only have a full speed USB connection, maxing out at around 1.4 MBps, which does not appear to be enough to fully leverage the ADS1278. Are there any EVMs for the ADS1278 which allow for a higher bandwidth connection like USB 2.0, or perhaps a similar ADC that has such an EVM?

  • Bernie,

In our ADS1278EVM-pdk, we use a DSP (TMSVC5507) built onto the MMB0 motherboard to communicate with the ADC directly. The data that is read back from the DSP is stored in memory located on the MMB0. Several conversions can be performed and saved into this memory slot on the MMB0. When the computer communicates with the MMB0, it reads the data from the memory. ADCPro, the program that comes with the PDK to evaluate the ADC, allows you to set the number of conversions performed before the computer reads back the data that was stored in memory on the MMB0. The communication between the ADC and the MMB0 is not dependent on the bandwidth connection speed of the USB.

  • Thank you for your quick response, that makes sense, I was not sure if there was a way to use the ADS1278EVM-pdk to stream the data continuously to the PC, it sounds like based on your response there is not. I imagine if you wanted to collect samples in real time and stream them to a PC via USB you would have to construct a custom board.

  • Two more simple questions, I assume the 5507 does no processing on the EVM, just collecting samples and passing them onto the PC for viewing or further processing?

I also assume that we don't offer any ADC boards that can stream data in real time to a PC at ADS1278 rates?

Thanks again for your help with this.

  • Bernie,

All the the processing takes place inside the PC.

I do not think that we offer any ADC board that can stream to the PC in real time.

  • How would one access this non real time data?

The feature Data Recorder of the ADCPro might record it in a file.

If I want to process the data differently than ADCPro (except for FFT), should I save data in a file by using Data Recorder, then open the file in my software and process it?

    Thank you for the input.

  • Ion,

You could use the data recorder to save the data read back from the MMB0 as a txt file. This would allow you to use process the data outside of ADCPro.

  • Thank you for the quick and clear reply.

  • Mr Beza -

Yes, can record the data to a file for later processing using ADCPro or other tool.

The Data Recorder plug-in will record the data into a tab-delimited text file that can easily be imported into a spreadsheet program (EXCEL or other).  Section 2.8.5 in the ADCPro User Guide details the file format of the saved data file.

  • Thank you.

I am looking also at solutions other than ADS1278EVM-PDK with ADCPro (Gumstix done, Alta Solutions in consideration) for a real time acquisition of data coming from ADS1278.
