AFE4404 GUI error communicating with device Windows VM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE4404EVM, AFE4404

Hi,

I am running Windows 10 as a virtual machine on my Mac. I have got everything running, except when I plug in the device and open the GUI, the GUI prompts with an error communicating to the device. It doesn't give me anymore info than that. Has anyone else had this problem and potential knows a solution?

Thank you,

Mitch

  • Hi Mitchell,

    Does the AFE4404EVM gets detected as Virtual COM Port under the Device Manager (of Windows 10) as shown in Figure 20 of EVM's user guide?

    Regards,
    Prabin.

  • Yeah. It is recognized as "USB Serial Device (COM4)" under Ports (COM & LPT)
  • Hi Mitchell,

    For the GUI to correctly identify the EVM, the USB COM port description should say "AFE44xx EVM (COM4)" instead of "USB Serial Device (COM4)"

    Follow the steps mentioned below to load the correct USB driver.

    • Open Device Manager->Ports(COM & LPT)
    • Right click "USB Serial Device (COM4)" and select Update Driver Software
    • Click "Browse my computer for driver software"
    • Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". Warning! Don't click "Browse for driver software on my computer" or Windows will ignore your selection (even though Driver Signature Enforcement is supposedly disabled).
    • Click Have Disk...
    • Now you can browse to the TI driver folder and select the driver in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\AFE4404EVM GUI\USB Driver.
    • Click Open->OK->Next
    • You'll get a red pop-up warning that the unsigned driver you are trying to install is the spawn of the devil. Click "Install this driver anyway".
    • You'll get a progress bar. It will take under a minute or two for the driver to install on the machine.
    • If all goes well you will get a message that "Windows has successfully updated your driver software"
    • You should now see AFE44xx EVM (COM4) under Ports(COM & LPT) in the Device Manager.

  • Hi,

    I tried this and it says the file FE44xx.inf is not digitally signed thus it was unable to install. Any recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Mitch

  • Hi Mitchell,

    To install AFE44xx.inf on Windows 10, you have to disable "Driver Signature Enforcement". You can follow the steps as mentioned in section 3.3.1 " Windows 8 Installing Unsigned Drivers" of AFE4404 Development Guide. Here is the link for the guide: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau621a/slau621a.pdf .
